The IRS will also receive revenue from the remainder of Form W-4 filers that fall between 50,000 and 100,000 in income and owe an additional 542 per year. Generally, taxpayers must furnish a Form W-1 for each year of gross income to which the tax applies, on or before the due date of the return for the year. (But see “Expiry Date” below.) If a taxpayer is required to file a Federal Tax Return for a calendar year and the due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the due date is postponed until the next regularly-scheduled tax return due date (and the employer's regular pay period for the period ending on the pay period preceding that date). Note that if a taxpayer has a pay period that coincides with a holiday, he can file only his income tax return (see Expiry Date) for the tax year during which the holiday occurs; he cannot file an adjusted gross income (AGI) tax return for any period other than the pay period preceding the holiday. Also note that a taxpayer who is not required to file a Federal Tax Return may file a Form 1040 tax return for the tax year during which the holiday falls. Example: Assume that on February 6, the due date to file a federal income tax return is February 16; that is, five day and one half days before the due date of the tax return. A Form W-1 is required for each taxable year of gross income, including all taxes due on or before the due date. Assume further that the next regular pay period for the year, May 8 through March 14, has a holiday. By February 23 and February 28, a Form 1040 is required by most federal agencies for all pay periods ending on those dates. Example: Assume that on May 3, the due date to file a federal income tax return is May 27; that is, five day and two half days before the due date of the tax return. A Form W-1 is required for each taxable year of gross income, including all taxes due on or before the due date. On March 13, the next pay period for the year in which the tax return is due is May 2 through March 13; that is, five day and four half days before the due date of the tax return. By April 2 and April 7, a Form 1040 is required by most federal agencies for all pay periods ending on those dates. Example: Assume that on March 5, the due date to file a federal income tax return is April 24; that is, five day and three half days before the due date of the tax return.
